Specialising in cool climate wine, Delatite’s winery and vineyards are on rolling hills at the base of Mt Buller in north-east Victoria. It was established in 1968 by Robert and Vivienne Ritchie and now run by their son David. Our approach to winemaking has been forged from the family’s history of working with the land in Victoria for over 170 years.
A small portion of the wine was fermented in large old oak puncheons to add some further complexity to the wine. All of the juice was fermented by our natural wild yeasts and then racked off its lees at the end of fermentation. The wine was prepared for bottling without any further ‘manipulation’, other than filtration to retain the pristine character of our delicate Riesling.
The nose of this wine shows lovely delicate floral aromatics that are typical of all Delatite Rieslings whilst the palate has layers of lemon rind and lemon blossom with fine talcy structure and a fresh acid finish. This wine can be drunk in its youth, but like all great Rieslings, it will age easily for ten years. Should be wonderful for up to twenty years, developing fabulous toasty honey characters, that Riesling is famous for.
Gleaming straw-green; has bell-clear varietal character from start to finish set in a delicate frame, the components of fruit and acidity in perfect balance, the palate elongated by the freshness of the lime-accented fruit. Always interesting these Delatite Rieslings. Honey and stonefruits, drizzled with lime, aniseed and subtle whiff of petrol. Ripe and juicy to taste, more to apple in flavour, but the lime is there too, with a firm almost tannic presence, clean acidity and a long dry finish. A bit rugged. I like it.
