de Villaine Mercurey Les Montots 2013
Domaine de Villaine is located in Bouzeron, nestled in the Côte Chalonnaise region between Chassagne-Montrachet and Santenay to the north and Rully and Mercurey to the south. Planted with vines by the monks of Cluny in the Middle Ages, this small, sunny valley has a rich and lengthy tradition of producing quality wines which reflect their exceptional terroir.
It is a very dense and at the same time tannic wine, its strength isn't however masking its finesse and the subtlety of its aromas. Consistent and subtle at the same time, it can keep between 5 and 10 years.
An expressive nose offers up an impressively pure array that is layered with copious amounts of earth and discreet spice notes. The earthy character continues onto the sleekly textured and well-detailed flavors that possess good if not special complexity on the mildly rustic and austere finale. This offers a bit more size and weight than the Digoine but the latter is more complete. Score: 88 Points; Tasted: Oct 2015; Drink: 2020+; Issue: 60; Allen Meadows - Burghound
