Cullen Kevin John Chardonnay 2013 (Museum Release)
All Cullen Wines are grown on a certified Biodynamic, Carbon Neutral and naturally powered estate. Grapes are harvested by hand on fruit and flower days according to the astrological calendar. The wines have no additions of yeast, acid or malolactic culture, and are in this sense natural wines which express the place and land on which they are grown, the vintage and the people.
Although the weather lead up to and including vintage was warm, the fruit produced by all varieties in the vineyards of Cullen Wines in 2013 was exceptional. We also had higher than usual rainfall in November and December. Harvest started on the 6th February and we found ourselves harvesting around the new moon and flower days, rather than the Full moon and fruit days as in previous vintages. There were also no super moons in this year’s harvest. The Chardonnay grapes were hand harvested on fruit and flower days from 37 year old vines. They were then whole bunch pressed and fermented with wild yeast in French barriques. It underwent natural malolactic fermentation prior to receiving 9 months of oak maturation. 30 % of the barrels were new and the balance was one year old.
Hand-picked chardonnay on a biodynamic flower day; whole bunch-pressed and wild-fermented in French oak and an egg, with a completely spontaneous fermentation before maturation for 7 months in French oak (30% new). It has brightness and life from the natural acidity remaining after the mlf, the fruit flavours drawn from both citrus and stone fruit inputs. Screwcap. Drink to: 2030; Price: $105.00; Date Alcohol: 14%; Rating: 96 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion
