Le sol translated from French means ‘the soil’, appropriate when one considers the significant impact the stony soils of our Gimblett Gravels Vineyard have on our wine called "Le Sol". They keep the growth and crop of these old clone Syrah vines in check and provide warmth in the autumn, all critical factors in developing the enormous character and presence this wine has. Traditionally made, heady aromas, luscious yet classical texture. "Le Sol" is all at once luscious, elegant and exuberant – and in a very short time it has shown the breeding of Syrah in the Gimblett Gravels.
The depth and penetration is a feature. The wine follows a very flowery tannin line, the extraction significant, but refined. The acidity is perfectly integrated, and the palate has tension and drive that carries the flavours to a very long, rich and elegant finish. This is the most beautifully refined ‘Le Sol’ to date. It has elegance and finesse, with intense black fruits, minerals, florals, earth and spices. Rating: 19.5+/20; Raymond Chan Wine Reviews
Dense but not a heavy wine, lithe rather than blockbuster although certainly not lacking power. Tightly packed flavours. including dark berry, Oriental spices, oak and a suggestion of floral characters are gradually displayed and will continue to be revealed as the wine ages. A truly classic 'Le Sol'. Rating: 5 Stars, 98 Points; Bob Campbell MW
Intensely aromatic Syrah with dark berry and violets leading the charge. Oriental spices and spicy French oak are added on the palate. Clearly a powerful wine but with energy and poise too. A mouthwateringly vibrant red with a featherbed texture. Rating: 19.5/20; Decanter
Very deep, youthful red/purple colour and a spicy, clovey, typical Gimblett Gravels almond note. It's tight and firm in the mouth, with elegance and extra length. The ample tannins are soft, fleshy and beautifully integrated. It's not as peppery as some vintages. A very stylish, polished wine. Rating: 96 Points; Huon Hooke
