It has been a remarkable journey for Clonakilla. When John Kirk planted the first vines in 1971 he had no idea that his vineyard would one day be celebrated as one of the best in the country. Along the way there have been trials and tribulations as well as moments of unprecendented success. Over time something important has become clear: Murrumbateman and Shiraz are one of those rare combinations in the world of wine that can produce something truly exciting.

The Shiraz Vioginer is a selection of the best Shiraz Viognier parcels, crafted from the Murrumbateman vineyard.

Spotlessly clean, lifted black cherry/blackberry and spice aromas, together with the unmistakable tang of Viognier; silky soft tannins, very good balance and length. Date Tasted: Oct 2005; Alcohol: 14%; Rating: 96 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion

Touch and go for best Clonakilla of vintage age I have seen, alongside the 2005. Indeed, many fans of Clonakilla’s flagship wine harp on about the 2004. It was showing with slight meaty characters over cherry, cherry compote, pepper, nuttiness in bouquet. Svelte yet palate staining to taste, more of the darkish fruits and pepper spice, fine sheet of tannin, supple acid, some spread to textural elements. A fine, wine unfurling. Tasted: June 2016; Closure: Cork; Drink: 2016-2024+; Rating: 95 Points; Mike Bennie - The Wine Front
