Von Kesselstatt Graacher Trocken Dry Riesling 2005

Up from vintage 2001 we are offering, similar to the "village-system" in Burgundy, so-called regional-wines, being typical for the area they originate from: Mosel or Saar or Ruwer.

This Graacher Riesling dry comes from the vineyards being located around the Mosel-village Graach and accentuates the natural conditions of ths region. It is full-bodied, juicy Mosel-Riesling with citrus-aromas, underlined by a bit of mint. Fine to solid and substantial food with meat, poultry or fish, you might say to Mom's cooking in all its varieties. Winery Notes.

With its scents and flavors of fresh apple, peach, wet stones, and toasted sunflower seeds, the 2005 Graacher Riesling trocken – essentially from lesser material in the Kesselstatt monopole Josefshofer – is more voluminous if less refined than the corresponding Wiltinger. This dense “little” wine finishes with real grip and smoky, set stone mineral notes, its slight suggestions of toasty bitterness nicely woven into a generous fruit matrix. Willi Schaefer Estate Riesling 2008 (screwcap)

9% alcohol, 46g/l residual sugar, 8.0g/l acid

This classically styled QbA hits all the right notes in its aromatic mélange of green apple, lime, a classy base of slate, apple blossoms, notes of petrol and an additional floral aspect redolent of lilacs. The palate is medium-full, juicy and thirst quenching, with crisp acidity, a fine core, just a wisp of sweetness and fine length and bounce on the focused, zesty finish. Delicious. 89+/N-2020. John Gilman, View From The Cellar

Likely to require more time to integrate. Driven by its slatey side. Mineral and subtly fruity, this is sappy on the palate with a tangy, well-integrated acidic touch. Deliciously well made. 88/N-2015+. Mosel Fine Wines

A big fragrance and a tangy, slatey, racy palate. Forthright and salty, not as polished as the pradikatsweine, but you can also knock it down without feeling guilty for the attention you failed to pay. So slurp away. Drink now to 12 years. Terry Theise

Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Auslese 375ml 2008

7.5% alcohol, 92g/l residual sugar, 9.4g/l acid

Cut very much from the same cloth as the beautiful auction spätlese, with a very crystalline personality and beautiful balance and raciness. The bouquet is a superb blend of green apple, lime, orange, slate, petrol and a touch of candied violets in the upper register. On the palate the wine is medium-full, long, pure and delivers a brilliantly complex base of soil, with great focus and balance, brisk acids and superb length and grip on the beautifully transparent finish. 94/2016-50+. John Gilman, View From The Cellar

Pale golden yellow. Pear, peppermint and vanilla on the seductive nose. Glazed apricot and honey make for a luscious texture, with bright acidity and insistent slate providing lift and cut. At once luxuriant and elegant, finishing with excellent spicy length. 92/N-2018. Joel Payne

Willi Schaefer Graacher Dry 2008 (screwcap)

11.5% alcohol, 7g/l residual sugar, 7.3g/l acid

Lovely. The bouquet offers up a simply beautiful nose of lime blossoms, grapefruit, green apple, petrol and a lovely base of slate. On the palate the wine is medium-full, crisp and quite defined by its slate elements, with lovely focus, bright acids, and fine length and grip on the dry and beautifully balanced finish. Very classy. 88 points, drink now to 2020. John Gilman, View From The Cellar

Very racy and light, and great overall precision. The finish is harmonious, with well-integrated flavours, even if the acidity is still somewhat present. This performs at levels well above a “mere” basic estate bottling and offers great QPR. 87/N-2014. Mosel Fine Wines

Willi Schaefer Graacher Feinherb 2008 (screwcap)

11% alcohol, 18g/l residual sugar, 7.6g/l acid

Another absolutely lovely bottle that offers outstanding value. The bouquet offers up scents of apple, lime zest, a touch of white cherries, petrol, lovely slate tones and a delicate top note of violets. On the palate the wine is medium-full, long, pure and succulent, with the slightly higher level of residual sugar giving the wine a real juicy character at the core. The finish is long, beautifully balanced and shows fine framing acidity to keep the wine bouncy and vibrant on the back end. 89/N-2020+. John Gilman, View From The Cellar

Precise notes of apple and citrus, with an attractive smoky side. This is very sappy and extremely well balanced. 87/N-2014. Mosel Fine Wines

Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett 2007 (screwcap)

Fruit-sweet and elegant. Tastes like a bowl of fresh fruit, with 40-45g of residual sugar and just 8% of alcohol.

A wonderful fragrance and crispy, classical appley fruit, a darling wine with so much cut you’ll drool like a fool! Drink 9-27 years. Sommelier alert (ideally suited to food). Terry Theise

Juicy fresh fruit of a mango/apple and mineral character and bursting with clean fresh fruit (and plenty of green apple), cut with sparkling fine acidity.  A long way off dry, balanced, long and again thoroughly delicious. A little sharper and snazzier than the Domprobst but not quite at the same quality level -- although admittedly a little different, too. So refreshment. 93 points, drink N-2027. Willi Schaefer is one of only eight German estates listed in Parker’s influential book The World’s Greatest Wine Estates. Parker says: “I’ve always thought of the Schaefer rieslings as wines for sybarites – glorious, pleasurable, but extraordinarily complex, savoury and just compelling. These are wines of purity, integrity and restraint, but understated power and intensity. It’s all about love and respect for nature and terroir. The finesse of the fruit is also important to me, and the harmony of the sweetness, fruit and acidity.”
