Risking the wrath of wine-police everywhere, we have just received a small allocation of Ovarius decanters.

These decanters are, in various degrees, theatrical, practical, rare, a little ridiculous, unexpectedly useful, occasionally revelatory, and great for starting conversation.

Developed in the Jura in 2006 for serving Vin Jaune, they have become the vessel of choice for many of the world’s most dynamic producers, including Anselme Selosse (Jacque Selosse), Marcel Lapierre, Philippe Pacelet, the Breton Family and many more. Since becoming the darling of many ‘natural’ wine producers in France, they are quite rare and it’s a joy to be able to get some more. They are hand blown and are a must for any adventurous wine lover.

I prefer to decant wines, both young and old. It is a sign of respect for old wines and a sign of confidence in young wines. Decanting old wines, just a few moments before they are served, helps to ensure that the wines’ clarity and brilliance are not obscured by any deposit that may have developed over time. Decanting young wines several hours before they are served gives the wine a chance to bloom and attain a stage of development that normally requires years of aging. Zerrutti Turn Decanter with separate silver base

This new shape was developed to narrow the gap between the Ouverture red wine glass and the bigger shapes in the Vinum series. The generous size of the bowl helps to release the wine's aromas, and is appropriate for all the classic red grape varieties. Perfect for young, full-bodied, complex red wines that are high in tannin. This glass smoothes out the rough edges, emphasizing the fruit, allowing wines to achieve a balance that would normally take years of ageing to acquire. The generous size of this glass allows the bouquet to develop fully. The shape directs the flow of wine onto the zone of the tongue which perceives sweetness, thus accentuating the fruit and de-emphasizing the bitter qualities of the tannin.
