Duhart Milon 2008

As I have previously written, Duhart Milon has become one of the stars of Pauillac thanks to the meticulous attention to detail as well as the investments made by the Rothschild family. A blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot, with the Cabernet picked during the week of October 8-15, and the Merlot a week earlier, the 2008 offers up sweet aromas of cassis, licorice, crushed rocks, and forest floor in an expressive, graceful aromatic display. Freshness, superb concentration, high but ripe, sweet tannins, and good acids characterize this dense, concentrated wine. It possesses a stunning upside potential of 25-30 years. Yet, like so many of these 2008s, the ripeness of the tannins along with the density and sweetness of the fruit suggest it will be approachable at an early age. Score: 93-95 Robert Parker, eRobertParker.com

Purple. Extremely deep colour - deeper than Lafite! Fine, scented, aromatic and flattering on the nose. Lovely texture. Rather forward and fine tannined. Powdery texture. Lots of Cabernet (73%) but very ripe Cabernet. Very fine and neat - truly baby Lafite, except that of course it tastes much less embryonic in terms of development than its stablemate Lafite. A very successful seductive Duhart-Milon. Great balance. Score: 17+ Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com

Durandal Bordeaux Superior 2008

A blend of Merlot 60%, Cabernet Franc 25% and Cabernet Sauvignon 15% from a single vineyard in the Cotes de Castillon directly adjacent to St Emilion appellation. Available September 2010. Importer: Echelon Wine Partners. Ripe blueberry/raspberry fruit with a clutch of dried herb and plenty of that dark minerality that’s so attractive in the wines of Bordeaux. It’s firm and dry, but surprisingly full and fruity (in context) with excellent density, good length and a refreshing finish. Clearly made to win friends yet does not betray its regionality and roots. And it ticks all the boxes for value, drinkability and interest. Super bargain. Ferrand Lartigue 2000

Wine Advocate #146 (Apr 2003)  Robert Parker 91 points  Drink 2005-2015. A limited production St.-Emilion, this estate has developed a considerable following for its user-friendly, lavishly fruited and oaked wines. From bottle, the 2000 Ferrand Lartigue has weight, expansiveness, structure as well as tannin, suggesting 1-2 years of cellaring is warranted. Cassis, licorice, tobacco smoke, and sweet fruit provide an expressive, medium to full-bodied personality. Long, pure, and impressively built, it will be drinkable between 2005-2015. This is accessible enough to drink young, but it has more structure than previous vintages.

Gazin 2008

The 2008 is a marvelous effort from this property situated adjacent to Petrus and only a stone's throw from l'Evangile. An amazing effort, the wine exhibits an inky/ruby/purple color, wonderful concentration, a beautifully sweet perfume of caramels, mocha, jammy black currants, and smoky blackberries, a full-bodied mouthfeel, a layered, skyscraper-like texture, and sweet but elevated tannins. Gigault Cuvee Viva 2003

Wine Advocate #158 (Apr 2005)  Robert Parker (88-90) points  Drink 2005-2009. An opulent, sexy, sensual offering with abundant quantities of caramel-infused black cherry and currant fruit, the 2003 boasts a voluptuous texture as well as a lush, richly fruity mid-palate, and heady alcohol and glycerin in the finish. Enjoy this alluring wine over the next 3-4 years.

Wine Advocate #152 (Apr 2004)  Robert Parker (87-89) points  Drink 2004-2008. Layers of deep black cherry fruit intermixed with notions of licorice and tobacco leaf soar from the glass of this medium ruby/purple-tinged 2003. A textural fruit bomb, with loads of lushness as well as nicely integrated spicy oak, this stylish, exuberant offering is ideal for drinking over the next 3-4 years. This 90% Merlot/10% Cabernet Sauvignon cuvee, cropped at 35 hectoliters per hectare. It tops the scales at 14.5% alcohol. The brilliant co-owner, Stephane Derenoncourt, is one of the brains behind this operation.

Grand Mayne 2008

A true blockbuster from St.-Emilion, and unquestionably Grand-Mayne’s finest effort since their 2005 and 1998, the 2008 boasts an inky/purple color as well as a lovely bouquet of blueberry liqueur, roasted coffee, and a touch of sweet, smoky oak. Full-bodied with exceptional density, super-ripe tannins, an impressive texture, and a 35+ second finish, this cuvee should be drinkable at an early age (2-4 years), and last for 15 or more. Grand Puy Lacoste 2008

There is a floral appeal to the nose violets overlaying fragrant bramble and bilberry. The palate is power packed, lots of ripe fruit backed by coffee, dark chocolate and black truffles. Underlying red fruits lighten and give brightness ensuring an elegant twist on the finish. Score: 92-95 Derek Smedley MW

This has a lovely, far more expressive nose than I expected with black cherries, a touch of iodine and violets (redolent of the superlative 2006) with superb definition. Just a faint hint of oyster shells. The palate is full-bodied, fully ripe tannins, a little more rounded than usual but superb depth, a wine that really caresses the palate. Blackberry, a touch of briary and cedar with a dash of vanillary new oak towards the finish. Superb length. Up there with Pichon Lalande. This is a more feminine GPL compared to other vintages, but one imbued with great breeding. Excellent. Score: 92-94 Neal Martin, eRobertParker.com

Haut Bages Liberal 2005

Pauillac. This Pauillac, which is often under most consumers’ radar, has come through with a strong effort in 2005. It possesses a deep ruby/purple hue as well as aromas and flavors of creme de cassis, road tar, cedar, truffles, and licorice. Full-bodied and fleshy, with good acidity, a powerful, muscular mouthfeel, sweet tannin, and good structure as well as purity, it should hit its peak in 4-5 years and last for two decades. Haut Bages Liberal 2006

A potential sleeper of the vintage, the 2006 Haut-Bages-Liberal exhibits a deep ruby/purple hue, plenty of intense creme de cassis fruit, notions of roasted herbs, underbrush, and licorice, moderate tannins, oodles of sweet fruit, and a layered mouthfeel. It should drink well for 15+ years. Robert Parker 89-91

Very dark crimson. Lift, even slight volatility, on the nose. Round, wonderful texture - what a lot of effort has gone into this. Fully ripe fruit. Quite distinguished. [Couldn’t help thinking this must be Pichon Longueville.] Super glossy - the opposite of rustic. Positively slides over the palate. Is there quite enough in the middle? It’s certainly very distinguished. Just slightly hollow in the middle. [Yet again, HBL shows especially well en primeur...] Jancis Robinson MW 17

Haut Brion 1995

Graves. This wine has been brilliant on every occasion I have tasted it. More accessible and forward than the 1996, it possesses a saturated ruby/purple color, as well as a beautiful, knock-out set of aromatics, consisting of black fruits, vanillin, spice, and wood-fire smoke. Multidimensional and rich, with layers of ripe fruit, and beautifully integrated tannin and acidity, this medium to full-bodied wine is a graceful, seamless, exceptional Haut-Brion that should drink surprisingly well young. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2030. Wine Advocate # 115 Feb 1998 Robert Parker 96 points

Haut Brion 2001

Haut-Brion’s 2001, which was bottled late (the end of September, 2003), possesses an unmistakable nobility as well as a burgeoning complexity. Plum/purple to the rim, this blend of 52% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Cabernet Franc is playing it close to the vest, having closed down considerably after bottling. Nevertheless, it reveals pure notes of sweet and sour cherries, black currants, licorice, smoke, and crushed stones. Medium-bodied with excellent purity, firm tannin, and an angular, structured finish, it requires 5-7 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020+. Wine Advocate # 153
Jun 2004 Robert Parker 94 points

The 2001 Haut Brion has added weight, flesh, and substance. It is not as dense or powerful as the 2000, but it is as noble and potentially as complex. A blend of 52% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Cabernet Franc, it is more evolved and slightly lighter than its fleshier, fuller-bodied sibling, the 2000. A moderately intense perfume of iron, sweet and sour cherries, earth, smoke, black currants, plums, and licorice is followed by a medium-bodied wine with excellent purity, fine density, supple tannin, and a long, persistent finish. Haut-Brion's 2001 represents only 50% of the production. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025. Wine Advocate # 146 Apr 2003 Robert Parker (93-95) points

Haut Brion 2003

Graves. The 2003 Haut-Brion reveals the vintage’s opulence and low acidity, but it possesses an even higher tannin level than the 2000. A deep ruby/purple color accompanies classic aromas of cranberries, scorched earth, minerals, and blue as well as black fruit notes. It hits the palate with considerable richness and intensity, but is neither overripe nor heavy. Cropped at low yields of 36 hectoliters per hectare, it has a good inner core of depth as well as sweetness. I do not think it will hit the heights of the perfect 1989, but it is a beautifully made, broad, medium to full-bodied claret with vigor, freshness, great texture, and not one trace of over-ripeness. Haut Brion 2008

41% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc. Much deeper colour than La Mission 2008. Really powerful dark purple colour. Minerals and lightness of touch on the nose. The most solid red from this stable but a little muted at this stage. Very firm, even slightly austere Cabernet tannins and pretty drying on the finish. Far from opulent. Needs, like La Mission, to put on a bit of flesh. Medium persistence. Impressive purity of fruit - the opposite of tarted up. Score: 18 Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com

A very complex wine, with black licorice, sweet tobacco, blackberry and earth. Full-bodied and long, with big, juicy tannins and lots of bright fruit, mushroom, earth and decadent fruit flavors. The most powerful wine of the vintage. Only 35 percent of the total production (normally this is 50 percent or 55 percent). Shows the selection. Score: 93-96 James Suckling, WineSpectator.com

A blend of 41% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Cabernet Franc. The nose is very expressive, ripe redcurrants, wild strawberries, a touch of gravel and a little wild hedgerow and black plum. The bouquet appears to be more expressive than recent vintages. The palate is very well balanced and slightly grainy, very fresh, lots of energy on the finish with a minerally undertow. The focus is very impressive: one feels this is an Haut-Brion that will blossom after bottling, for unlike the nose, the palate feels as if it is holding something back. Firm tannins, traces of earth and bay leaf on the finish. Excellent - but patience is necessary. Tasted April 2009 Score: 94-96 Neal Martin, eRobertParker.com

La Fleur de Bouard 2004

The 2004 vintage in Pomerol is clearly better than 2003. There was little or no heat stress and the harvest, although later, took place in ideal conditions towards the end of September/beginning of October before the rain. As in the rest of Bordeaux, work in the vineyards to curb yields was obligatory, otherwise dilution and lack of ripeness were the pitfalls for less successful producers. The best wines have deep colour, a racy fruit character, lively acidity and solid tannic frame. They lack the intensity and complexity of great years (1998, 2000) but appear to be in the good/classic mould of a vintage like 1996. If the price is right they’ll provide sound medium-term drinking. James Lawther MW

A firm, incisive wine with plenty of power and extract. Deep colour, dark fruits on the nose with the oak a little obtrusive at this stage. Sweet attack, full, round and warm flowing to a firm square structure. Tannins grainy. Freshness on the finish. Drink 2008-2015; Decanter.com

Pomerol, Bordeaux. Better than the 2003, the outstanding, deep ruby/purple-hued 2004 La Fleur de Bouard offers terrific black raspberry and berry fruit along with hints of truffles, licorice, and smoke. Made by Hubert de Boüard of Château l’Angélus in Saint-Emilion, this is a spicy, modern, toasty wine, showing how good Lalande de Pomerol can be if treated correctly. Wine Enthusiast: 90 points

These are very rare wines from Chateau La FLEUR de BOUARD (owned by Hubert de BOUARD, the owner of Chateau ANGELUS). This particular vineyard is on very dense clay soils that are not just close in composition but virtually identical to the soils of Chateau Petrus just a very very short distance away. Having tried this wine on a few occasions I can openly say it is without doubt one of the most complex, thick and unctuous Merlots I have ever tasted, and I personally feel compelled to take a few cases of both these cuvees home to my cellar. La Fleur de Bouard 2006

At present, this estate is the reference point for high quality wines from Lalande de Pomerol. The basic cuvee from proprietor Hubert de Bouard and his wife Corinne, the 2006 La Fleur de Bouard is composed of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Sensationally rich, with abundant quantities of blue and black fruits, spring flowers, graphite, licorice, and hints of espresso roast as well as toasty oak, it is supple enough to be drunk now, or cellared for a decade. Wine Advocate # 181; Feb 2009 Robert Parker 91 points

The undisputed reference point for high quality in Lalande de Pomerol, this 50-acre estate produces a blend of 80% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2006 tips the scales at 13.5% natural alcohol. A beautiful effort, it offers sweet black cherry fruit interwoven with notes of licorice, pain grille, and espresso roast. Dense, opulent, medium to full-bodied, pure, and long, it should drink well for a decade or more. The luxury cuvee, Le Plus de la Fleur de Bouard, which is kept three years or more in barrel, will not be released until 2010 or so, but it represents the quintessence of this estate. Unfortunately, I have never seen a bottle of this wine available at retail as the production is so minuscule. Wine Advocate # 170; Apr 2007 Robert Parker (90-93)

La Mission Haut Brion 2006

This superb effort rivals La Mission’s 2005. There are 6,000 cases of the 2006, and general manager Jean-Philippe Delmas told me that the Merlot came in at a natural alcohol that exceeded 15%. The final alcohol is a whopping 14.3%, the pH is 3.8, and the blend is 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. This utterly profound, exceptionally rich, full-bodied, thick La Mission is undeniably one of the candidates for the “wine of the vintage.” It possesses a dense ruby/purple color followed by sweet blue and black fruit notes intertwined with notions of burning embers and flowers. Unctuous, massively fruity, and thick, this is a great La Mission! Anticipated maturity: 2012-2035+. Robert Parker 96-100

59% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Cabernet Franc. 55% of total production. Deep crimson with strong purple notes. Fairly mild nose and rather voluptuous palate entry. Very fine tannins but with pretty rigid backbone. A certain velvetiness. Round and fine. But muted. Certainly refreshing but there is a little green streak on the finish. Seems weaker than I would have expected. Too much Tour in here? Opened up in the glass - more aromatic and playful than the Haut-Brion. But lighter and therefore apparently skinnier. Lafite Rothschild 2003

Pauillac. A modern day version of the 1959 Lafite, the 2003 Lafite Rothschild was bottled in mid-May, 2005 after achieving 12.9% natural alcohol – hardly an astonishing figure given the vintage’s weather conditions. A combination of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, it represents a ripe version of the essence of Lafite-Rothschild. Dense purple-colored, with classic notes of graphite intertwined with melted licorice, creme de cassis, smoke, and flowers, it reveals extraordinary richness, opulence, power, purity, intensity, and viscosity. Whether this wine will close down or not is questionable as it is somewhat atypical given its sweetness and softness. Analytically, there are extremely high tannins, which I suspect will assert themselves in the future. Production in 2003 was less than half of normal. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2050.
