Suduiraut 2007 375ml

A wine marked by its purity, freshness and honeyed, unctuous flavour as well as searing freshness and length. It has the breed of a great wine. 5 stars. Score: 19 Decanter Magazine, Decanter.com

A racy mix of lime and tropical fruits give a lovely fragrance on the nose. The palate has lots of charm, floral at the start with lush apricot, peach and candied peel fleshing out the middle. There is weight to the finish, the sweetness beautifully balanced by lemon peel. Score: 89-93 Derek Smedley MW

Green gold. Muted, almost dry nose. Very sweet start though a little on the hot barley sugar side rather than wonderfully fine and nuanced. A bit sugary. Astringent finish but massive sugar levels even if not fine. Chewy end. Gone for bust! Not quite as fine at this stage as I have come to expect of this property. Score: 17.5 Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com

Solid baby sticky, with a core of apple pie, honey and spicy fruit on the palate. Medium- to full-bodied, with medium sweetness and a lively finish. 92-95. Score: 92-96 James Suckling, WineSpectator.com

(90% semillon with 10% sauvignon blanc) Bright yellow-gold. Subdued but powerful nose offers fresh stone fruits, grapefruit zest, ginger and honey, all lifted by a floral topnote. Lush, thick and honeyed, but with superb acidity framing the flavors of mandarin orange, pineapple, honey and chalk. Finishes very long and subtle, with a saline nuance and terrific fruit penetration. A good bit of the estate's sauvignon blanc went into the dry S de Suduiraut in '07, noted managing director Christian Seely. Score: 92-95 Stephen Tanzer, Intl. Wine Cellar

From a blend made one month ago (in two barrels.) This has a well-defined nose, complex with touches of clear honey, acacia, hints of orange-blossom. Very well focused on the palate, with superb marriage of nervosité (from the first two tries) and the botrytis concentration of the later tries. Citrus fruits, a touch of orange zest towards the finish. Not a rich, weighty, viscous Suduiraut, this is more about tension and vibrancy. An understated Suduiraut for the vintage but well-crafted. Drink 2010-2030. Tasted April 2008. Score: 91-93 Wine Advocate

d'Yquem 1995 375ml

Sauternes is a tiny appellation, only about 2% of the Bordeaux vineyards, located 20 kilometres southeast of Bordeaux. It is difficult to understand with any certainty, due to the lack of written documents, what originally motivated winegrowers to let their grades "rot" on the vine to produce a different kind of wine. Apparently, late harvest wines already existed in the 16th and 17th centuries. This sort of wine became widespread in Sauternes in the 18th and 19th centuries due to the interest shown by connoisseurs such as Thomas Jefferson and Grand Duke Constantine, who induced winegrowers read more...to wort their grapes in order to single out those most affected by "noble rot".

Sauternes is different from other sweet wines for two reasons. First of all, Sauternes has a unique interplay of soil, topography, and microclimate which promotes the regular growth of Botrytis cinerea perhaps more than anywhere else. Second, the vineyards are harvested in several "waves" in order to pick only the most botrytised grapes each time. The wine starts out quite assertively on the palate with mineral flavours and a rich, complex flavour profile. Perfectly balanced, this wine's incredible complexity will become more accessible in a few more years' time.

d'Yquem 1998 375ml

Sauternes. The 1998 Chateau Yquem was released several months ago. This estate does not allow tasting from cask (where the wine spends 42 months), and it is not released until five years after the vintage. The 1998 Yquem (95 points) is a great success. Made in an elegant style, it is not a blockbuster such as 1990, 1989, and 1988. It is well-delineated, with wonderfully sweet aromas of creme brulee, pineapples, apricots, and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, it is not as sweet as the biggest/richest Yquem vintages, but it is gorgeously pure, precise, and strikingly complex. Already approachable, it should evolve for 30-50 years ... without a doubt. Wine Advocate # 149 Oct 2003 Robert Parker 95 Drink: 2003 - 2053

d'Yquem 1999 375ml

The 1999 was particularly impressive for the vintage. It was superbly focused and beautiful on the nose, with sugared lemons, tropical fruit and maple syrup character. Full-bodied and thick, yet very fine, it was extremely sweet and long. 94/100 JS, Wine Spectator

Chateau d’Yquem have just released the 1999 vintage, at a very enticing price. Having taken advice from the negociant trade in Bordeaux, Pierre Lurton, the new Managing Director at d’Yquem, who also heads up Chateau Cheval Blanc, has released the 1999 at a lower price than the 1998, a vintage of similar quality. Lurton is keen to see Chateau d’Yquem generate excitement among wine lovers and be consumed and enjoyed, and not just treated as a trophy wine being traded at high prices. The price is at a similar level to the release price of the 1993 vintage, and it is a great opportunity for people to get some d’Yquem at a reasonable price. I would also mention that the quality of the 1999 Rieussec is extremely good, and d’Yquem are legendary for making excellent wines in less classic vintages, due to their severe selection process in the vineyard. We have secured good stocks but the demand at this price is likely to be very healthy, so please do not delay!

d'Yquem 2001 750ml

Sauternes. The 2001 Chateau d’Yquem promises to be a legend of a wine. Many of the great houses of Sauternes and Barsac have produced wonderful 2001’s that have raised the level of excitement about just how good the Yquem would be. Perfect, massive, and gorgeous, would appear to be the answer. There has been much speculation prior to this release about what the price would be. As this release has been keenly anticipated and the international demand will be strong, please order quickly and we will do our best to supply your order.

There are 10,000 cases of this perfect sweet white Bordeaux. The 2001 Yquem reveals a hint of green in its light gold colour. While somewhat reticent aromatically, with airing, it offers up honeyed tropical fruit, orange marmalade, pineapple, sweet creme brulee, and buttered nut-like scents. In the mouth, it is full-bodied with gorgeously refreshing acidity as well as massive concentration and unctuosity. Everything is uplifted and given laser-like focus by refreshing acidity. This large-scaled, youthful Yquem appears set to take its place among the most legendary vintages of the past, and will age effortlessly for 75+ years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2100+. Wine Advocate #158 (Apr 2005) Robert Parker 100 points Drink 2010-2100

This extremely perfumed with pineapple, lime and vanilla, as well as hits of apricots and peaches. Full bodied and very sweet, there's an explosion of fruit on the palate. It goes on and on in the mouth with an electrifying finish. All this richness but incredible balance an harmony ; I love it. This could be the new benchmark for sweet wines – 95-100 points. James Suckling – The Wine Spectator  - May 2005

Beautiful brilliant golden colour. Concentrated bouquet of ripe fruit (mirabelle plum, apricot, and mango) and dried fruit (fig, raisin, and quince), followed by hints of white fruit (pear and vine peach) and spicy nuances (saffron, curry, toasty aromas, fresh mint, and eucalyptus). This vintage's bouquet has a rare subtlety that can only increase with age.

The wine starts off sumptuously on the palate, with uncommon volume and body. Its is tremendously suave and well-structured, providing an intense tasting pleasure for which the keywords are balance, opulence, and refinement. Rarely have we encountered such an impression of perfection in the history of Château d'Yquem. The aftertaste goes on into infinity, echoing the multiple sensations experienced up until then. After experiencing this unique pleasure, one has only one idea in mind - to re-enter the extraordinary world of 2001 Yquem. Château d'Yquem

d'Yquem 2002 750ml

There is no other wine in the world like it, and there is no other luxury wine that can possibly justify its price as much as Yquem. The remarkable amount of painstaking labor necessary to produce the nectar known as Yquem is almost impossible to comprehend. Robert Parker

Young Sauternes often reminds me of pear juice and this wine, tasted from a half bottle just couriered from Bordeaux, was like nothing more than the healthiest, cleanest pear juice. Pale gold with a slightly greener tinge than most young Yquem. Very fresh, long and deep-flavoured this wine has that ingredient X that Yquem always seems to manage, but this is certainly not one of the sweetest or most intense Yquems. It is certainly greater than any other 2002 sweet white bordeaux I remember tasting, with the strongly possible exception of Climens, but is almost spookily open for a recently-bottled Yquem. There’s the merest hint of astringency on the finish still but this wine could be enjoyed in its relatively simple youth. 18/20; Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com

Beautiful apple, vanilla and honey aromas, with just the right amount of new wood. Full-bodied, medium-sweet, with lots of pretty pineapple and honey. Long and refined. A beautifully silky and balanced Sauternes. Lots of intensity, and well-knit. Unrivaled in this vintage. Best after 2009. 96 points. James Suckling, WineSpectator.com

d'Yquem 2004 375ml

Sauternes. A big event this, the showing of the latest vintage en primeur at the château (currently being renovated by new owners LVMH). Sandrine the oenologist and Pierre Lurton the manager have much to be proud of. This lively gold nectar has a super-powerful nose that comes leaping out of the glass, with just a hint of lemon oil from the Sauvignon (a full third of the blend this year) on top of the great whack of barley sugar richness of Semillon underneath. There is the most viscous pear juice sensation, good acidity, still some astringence and a great weight with a lovely fresh finish. Very persistent. Score: 18.5 Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2005

Pierre Lurton, the manager of Yquem as well as Cheval-Blanc, told me that he really wanted to mark his arrival at the legendary estate, so he went to draconian lengths to deliver something superb in 2004 (he reduced the crop by half, so probably less than 75,000 bottles will be produced). This shows wonderful aromas of pineapples, apples and lemons with loads of botrytis. Full-bodied, but incredibly refined and long. Superfresh and racy. It goes on and on and on. Fabulous. This has an incredible purity and brightness. Like a perfectly cut diamond. 95-100. Score: 95-100 James Suckling, Wine Spectator (April 05), April 2005

d'Yquem 2006 375ml

While no surprise here, this wine, which will be bottled in 2009, is certainly this estate's greatest effort since their 2001. It completely outclasses everything from the appellation, but even when you're number one, that's often hard to do. This light gold wine offers up a sensational smorgasbord of aromas including huge honeyed pineapple and other caramelized tropical fruit flavors, massive richness, and a viscous, unctuous texture with the oak beautifully integrated. The wine has enough acidity to buttress its full-bodied mouthfeel, but this is not by any means the sweetest or most alcoholic of the d'Yquems I have tasted. In fact, in the range of d'Yquems, this is a powerful wine, but it is one built more on finesse and elegance, a la the 1988. Nevertheless, this wine will prove to have 50+ years of longevity. The finish, the mid-palate, the sensation of looking at a skyscraper of Semillon with a small dosage of Sauvignon, is impressive. Like all of the sweet wines of Barsac and Sauternes, one can drink this young, but the nuances and complexities really don't emerge for at least a decade, especially in the case of a wine such as this. Bravo! Score: 96-98+ Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (181), February 2009

Unbelievable wine - with so much more concentration and richness than the other examples of 2006 Sauternes tasted immediately beforehand. Yet with no shortage of life either. Amazing smoothness, richness and depth spreads all across the palate - even better than I remember the 2005 at this stage. Edge of caramel already but the tingle of fresh green verdure. Great texture and lift and weight of sweetness. No volatility apparent whatsoever (unlike some others) - in fact Pierre Lurton said the VA levels were lower than in the last 30 years. Great finesse - wonderfully pure. Score: 19 Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2007

d'Yquem 2007 375ml

Very aromatic and unctuous with a lovely point of freshness coming through at the end. On the palate there is a great concentration and richness (130g residual sugar in this sample). Very unctuous yet complex and fresh. A touch of alcohol shows through on the finish but these are early days and this is only a marker for the finished article. This will be one of the great Yquem vintages, though on the day Climens was even more impressive. 5 stars. Score: 19 Decanter Magazine, Decanter.com

The nose is floral with behind the fragrance a complex mix of pineapple and lime blended in with candied orange peel. It is rich, voluptuously lush but not over heavy as there is a racy lime freshness that lifts and brightens the fruit. Layers of flavour add to the complexity and this wonderful mix of different fruits is there on the long fragrant finish. Score: 94-98 Derek Smedley MW

Deep golden with an orange tinge. Very tangy. And thick. At the same time. Massive weight! Extraordinary fullness. An edge of something a bit corrective - almost bitter. Very big and hits you between eyeballs. Citrus pith. Needs to settle down and become more gentle. Big and round. Almost over the top. So rich!!!!! But definite bitterness on the finish. Winemaker Sandrine Garbay, who has been there an incredible 14 years, thinks the 2001 has more finesse. I agree. Score: 19 Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com

This is amazing. Full of spicy botrytis character, with smoke and piecrust underneath. Full and rich, yet not cloying or too dense. It's lively and long, finishing with intensity and powerl. A unnerving combination of wild ripe fruit and intense botrytis, with lively acidity. Really powerful. Should be a perfect wine. 97-100. Score: 97-100 James Suckling, WineSpectator.com

(14% alcohol with 140 g/l r.s.; 70% semillon and 30% sauvignon blanc) Pale gold. Knockout nose of mirabelle, pineapple, spices and honey. Dense and thick but with racy acidity leavening the wine's liqueur-like flavors of peach, apricot and pineapple and imbuing it with superb energy. With aeration, this showed captivating notes of vanilla, toast and fresh and exotic herbs, plus a saline aspect on the very long finish. Still an infant, but already boasts terrific cut and purity of fruit. Director Pierre Lurton was thrilled to have a large quantity of wine at this high level of quality. Score: 95-98 Stephen Tanzer, Intl. Wine Cellar

A sample blend excluding the 7th passage (80% of the blending). The Yquem '07 was cropped at 18hl/ha, reportedly similar to the 1967 in the middle of the harvest and 188 towards the later picking. This has a very concentrated nose although it is less showy at the moment. But there is tremendous power here, touches of marmalade, honey, peach and orange zest. Superb delineation. The palate is striking but its sense of urgency and nervosité, real vibrancy in the mouth even at this early stage. Pure clear honey, a touch of spice, orange cut marmalade and supreme focus on the almost Zen-like finish that will be bolstered with the later tries are added. Lovely touch of quince paste and dried lychee on the finish, which has 130gms/L residual. Superb Yquem, though not in the class of the '01. Drink 2012-2050. Tasted April 2008.
