Carmes de Rieussec 2006 375ml

The second wine of Chateau Rieussec Carmes de Rieussec is selected according to the same standards as the first wine. Its constant feature is centred on a fine aromatic structure dominated by citrus aromas. The name, Carmes de Rieussec, relates to the monks of the Carmes de Langon, who were owners of the Rieussec estate in the 18th century.

A blend of Semillon 85%, Sauvignon Blanc 10% and a little Muscadelle 5% this wine has spent 18 months in barrel. This is an intense golden yellow coloured wine that is showing preserved fruit on the nose, with hints of apricot. The nose develops on the palate as the range of flavours deliver a harmonious well-rounded first impression. In the 18th century, the Rieussec estate belonged to the Carmes de Langon monks. The confiscation of the estate during the revolution led to its public sale around 1790 as an 'object of national heritage' to Mr. Marheilhac, the period’s owner of Château La Louvière at Leognan.

For the 1855 classification, M. Mayne was the owner of the estate. The quality of the Rieussec soil earned its ranking as a first growth Sauternes and Barsac. After that date, Rieussec’s history involves many change of owners. Acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in 1984 the estate then included 110 hectares of which 68 hectares were vineyards. To enhance Chateau Rieussec’s potential, stern measures were implemented, including meticulous sorting of seeds and fermenting in barrels, which provides a superior selection for blending fine wines as well as a new chai being built to extend ageing in barrels. Carmes de Rieussec 2007 375ml

Sauternes is the cradle of France’s finest sweeties and its enchanting 07s are just starting to land. It hurts to shell out more than $100 for a half bot of dessert wine, but Rieussec’s second label is one of the best value alternatives. Classic lighter style, layered with honey and succulent stone fruits. $37 (375mL) Drink 2012-2017; 93 points; Tyson Stelzer; Wine Taste

Winery Notes

This is not the first label Rieussec nor is it Chateau D'Yquem, what it is though is the best value in Sauternes I have come across in my years in the industry. A youthful pale yellow in colour, the nose shows marmalade, vanilla and tropical fruit aromas. In the mouth the wine has a soft acidity with characters of citrus, apricot and ever present botrytis coming to the fore and lingering for some time. It finishes with a lovely acidity which balances the ripe fruit. This is always great value. Excellent BW; WineStar©

Lovers of this cru will not be disappointed. As usual the emphasis is on elegance and freshness rather than power. There is piercingly pure fruit and length, yet with fine concentration. From being wildly unpredictable, this cru is now presenting wines of great originality and character. The nose has an extraordinary zesty orange flavour, concentration and freshness, and on the palate you can taste how concentrated it really is - yet so fresh and refined. A delightful wine in a different and original mould. 4 stars. Score: 17 Decanter Magazine, Decanter.com

Very pale and greenish. Cheesy and very open. No tension. Bright, quite vivid fruit on the palate. I can taste the oak more than fruit, which is a bit of a worry. Not sure about the élevage of what was clearly interesting fruit. Score: 15.5 Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com

This is lacking some cohesion on the nose - the vivacity that other Sauternes have demonstrated. Guiraud 1996 375ml

One of the stars of the vintage for Sauternes, the 1996 Guiraud offers a sumptuous nose of tangerine fruit intermixed with caramel and buttered corn. The wine displays a deep golden color, and striking flavors of Chinese black tea, marmalade, honey, and citrus. The powerful yet elegant flavors remain in the mouth for a significant period of time. While this wine is traditionally a blend of 65% Semillon and 35% Sauvignon, Xavier Plantey, the estate's manager, told me that there is nearly 45% Sauvignon Blanc in the final blend of the 1996. Guiraud 2005 375ml

Delivers lots of botrytis spice, with lemon tart and cooked apple. Full-bodied, with loads of cream and vanilla and an intense tropical fruit and honey aftertaste. Long and viscous, with a layered and beautiful spicy finish. Hard not to drink it now. Best after 2014. 97 points Wine Spectator

No quibbles here. This is a concentrated, fairly complex offering whose pear syrup, pineapple, roasted nuts, coconutty aromas may be the slightest bit unusual but are every bit inviting. Juicy and rich in flavor with more than a touch of honey noted, the wine has plenty of underlying acidity that helps make its youthfully sugary flavors attractive even now but which also guarantees that this lush wine has a second decade and possibly more in its future. Rated: 93 points Connoisseurs' Guide

Full golden-yellow. Orange oil, clove, ginger, mint and minerals on the perfumed, vibrant noise. Superrich but juicy and vibrant, with an exotic hint to the fresh apricot and peach flavors. This boasts an exhilarating sugar/acid balance and finishes with terrific life and grip.  Rated: 92(+?) By Stephen Tanzer; International Wine Cellar

Guiraud 2006 375ml

Sweet lime sherbet with bitter orange notes. Lots of power, sweetness and richness. Some notes of green vegetation on the very back palate but overall a good debut for the new regime. Just a bit hard and green on the finish. Jancis Robinson MW 17.5

Tasted with a negotiant. Undoubtedly one of my favourite Sauternes in 2006, juxtaposed against the 2005 I think this is better. The nose takes some coaxing but eventually reveals a delectable bouquet of honey and white flowers. The palate has a crisp entry, a good level of botrytis with racy acidity. Very harmonious with notes of tangerine, honey and a touch of apricot on the mid-palate. Nice fatness to it and impressive length. Excellent. Tasted March 2007. Neal Martin 93-95  Wine Advocate

Guiraud 2007 375ml

Last year this property produced an outstanding wine. This year, the instability of the sample made assessment difficult. Certainly, there is enormous concentration and fine acidity, but it is impossible to be precise as to how good it will become, so the mark is only an approximation and could well go up. The sample was cloudy and dark. 4 stars. Score: 17.5 Decanter Magazine, Decanter.com

Lots of ripe power comes out on the nose lush apricot and peach. The palate is lighter, less complex, with fresh lemon and lime very much in evidence. Richer weightier fruit is there towards the finish, the candied peel intermingles with the apricot and peach. Score: 87-90 Derek Smedley MW

Honeyed gold. Hint of veg on the nose. Big and round and molten. A burnt edge. A bit hot. All mass rather than finesse Score: 16.5 Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com

La Chapelle de Lafaurie 2003 375ml

This is the second wine of Lafaurie Peyraguey, an exceptional Sauternes house, considered by Robert Parker to be one of the five or six finest domaines of the Appellation. Vinified by Georges Pauli, the wines have been an outstanding success since the 1980s on account of a tireless drive for improvement without compromise. Reducing the percentage of Sauvignon Blanc, ageing the wine in new oak barrels, and an ever-stricter selection has borne fruit – as well as the creation of a second wine, ‘La Chapelle de Lafaurie'.

A beautiful fresh tropical nose with hints of pineapple, marmalade and a touch of spice. In the mouth it is abundantly rich but some tight acidity on the back keeps all of the luscious sweetness in check as the flavours continue on a long finish. Won't last the decades its big brother is destined to but at this sort of price, it doesn't really matter either. Excellent wine, excellent value. Drink: Now- 2016. La Tour Blanche 2007 375ml

In recent years this wine has hovered between four and five stars. The mix of lemon and grapefruit give freshness on the nose and this citrus character is there at the start of the palate. There is a richer feel towards the mid palate more apricot and peach, the sweetness lending some flesh towards the back. The fresher, lighter fruit mix shows more strongly on the finish, candied lime and lemon peel. Score: 87-91 Derek Smedley MW

Mid honeyed gold. Rather loose on the nose. Big and sweet and yet there is a little streak of green acidity too. But a bit aggressive on the palate. And pretty soft and loose Score: 16.5 Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com

Le Tertre Du Lys D'Or 2005 375ml

The Le Tertre Du Lys D'Or Cuvee d'Exception Sauternes first came to prominence in this country more than three years ago following a James Halliday article in The Weekend Australian in which he referred to the 2001 vintage as “all the quality and flavour one might expect from a second label of Chateau d'Yquem, if such a thing existed”. At the time, I wrote the following in The WineStar Journal;

At a time when many are contemplating a purchase in the much hyped 2005 Bordeaux En-Primeur, it is refreshing to be able to offer this sort of value to really set the cat amongst the pigeons. This was featured, almost apologetically in a recent Journal and not surprisingly sold out in less than 3 days. The Le Tertre du Lys D’or is from the magnificent 2001 vintage in Sauternes, and if you think 2005 Bordeaux has been hyped, the ‘stickies’ out of 2001 are commanding insane prices (d'Yquem 2001 is now over $1000 retail).

So what do you do if you come across a 2001 Sauterne, available for about the same price as Australia's leading examples and described by James Halliday as having "all the quality and flavour one might expect from a second label of Chateau d'Yquem, if such a thing existed…. a beautiful mini-version of a great sauterne from a great vintage, with beautiful balance, and while it will change and become more complex during the next 10 to 20 years, it is delicious right now”? You buy! Not just that, I recommend doing it quickly as even though we have purchased the remaining stocks available in Australia, such offers on real Sauternes come along very rarely and are highly sought after.

And buy people – and hopefully you – did. Now fast forward to the next great Sauternes vintage in 2005 and Le Tertre Du Lys D'Or Cuvee d'Exception 375ml 2005 has landed on our shores and it is at least as good as the 2001. A lighter, brighter golden colour to its predecessor it also shows very little development at this stage of its life. The nose has all the unmistakable nuances of quality Sauternes with fresh flowers, pear, citrus and tropical notes. In the mouth it is beautifully textured. I described the 2001 as coming off a lot 'thicker' than it looks and it must be a house style as this is right in that groove. Massive richness it is a concoction of sweet fruit characters that linger for quite a while with a cut of acidity on the end. I'm happy to drink these now but suggest improvement over the next decade at least. An excellent wine and somewhat absurd to think one can have real Sauternes for the same, if not less money that imitation styles the world over.
