Seppelts Para Liqueur Port Number 101

During 150 years of wine making, Seppelt Wines has built a reputation of innovation and dedication to quality. The Seppelt approach is to harness the strength and characteristics of each region and create varietally and regionally expressive wines.

Today, Seppelt strives for the same standards of excellence that gave these wines the iconic status for which they are renowned.

Our wine making philosophy focuses on producing exceptional wines, synonymous with quality and refined elegance in style. We aim to deliver wines that are comparable with the best in the world and our winemakers go to great lengths to ensure our wines meet exceptionally high quality standards, shown by the numerous accolades won over time.

Sourcing fruit from cool climate Victorian regions means that the grapes take longer to ripen and hence retain more flavour, creating wine with refined and elegant structure.

Para Liqueur Aged Tawny Port comes from a Solera (never ending) system and this is truly a superb port. Great complexity and lingering intensity. The numbered bottlings began with 101 in 1976. 101 was the first bottling that now goes up to 127 (one every 12-15 months roughly), 101 was bottled in 1976 - blended from puncheons going back to the 1930's.

Seppeltsfield Cellar No.8 Rutherglen Muscat

Colour is a bright golden brown. Fragrantly spiced with youthful floral and rose petal aromas, given depth by aged characters of raisined fruit with an earthy spirit lift. The aromatics are perfectly woven together, between layers of dried fruit florals lies a charming minerality that belies the wine's viscous texture, to drive home the point that really, this is a fruit driven Muscat in decidedly bang-right-on New World character. The palate is rich and luscious, with rich, raisined fruit balanced by a clean acidity and symbiotic, aromatic spirit. The after taste is soft, lifted and long lasting. Makes the perfect match to all desserts and fine cheeses, remarkably refreshing when served chilled

Stanton & Killeen Classic Muscat 500ml

I had a slight preference for the non-vintage Classic Muscat. It reveals a deep amber color as well as remarkable aromas of maple syrup, melted caramels, figs, and brandy-macerated raisins. A dense, opulent, viscous, full-bodied, moderately sweet personality provides a stunning mouthful of fortified red wine. It will drink well for a decade or more. Full-bodied and moderately sweet, with terrific fruit intensity, this yummy Tokay will last for a decade. Wine Advocate #148 (Aug 2003)  Robert Parker 91 points  Drink 2003-2013more

Stanton & Killeen Vintage Port 2002

With Constellation Wines in their (lack of) wisdom, deleting the Reynella Vintage Port from their portfolio, it has robbed us of one of our two Vintage ‘Port’ icons. This week we present a truly great vintage of the other, Stanton & Killeen Vintage Port 2002. Arguably the best vintage of Australia’s best VP style, it has been rated 96 points by James Halliday and has a capital city Gold Medal. It is near on impossible to find, more so now given we have purchased remaining stocks. If found, it is generally at its retail price of $39.99. This really is a case of, if you only buy one vintage port this year…

Careful blending of separate parcels of shiraz, durif and a host of Portuguese grape varieties has resulted in a wine of perfect balance. Lifted brandy spirit and dark cherry fruit dominate the bouquet.

Spicy blackberry and black cherry flavours combine to round out a wonderfully soft finish on the palate. Once again balance is the key word with an harmonious combination of fruit tannin and acid. Drinking well now yet has the potential to age gracefully for another 20 years or more.

Stanton & Killeen Wines Rutherglen Vintage Port 2002; Excellent hue, still red-purple; a totally delicious vintage port style, with an elegance no other young Australian vintage ports approach; spicy black fruits, and a long finish. Cork. 18.1% alc. Rating 96 Points Drink 2022 Date Tasted Mar 07 James Halliday Wine Companion

Gold Medal - Hobart Wine Show 2006

Supple, elegant and harmonious, this silky-fine port has a restrained but delightfully perfumed bouquet of brandied morello cherries, dark chocolate, cinnamon and cloves backed by notes of fresh spirit and floral aromas. It opens slowly, with intense flavours of dark cherries, plums, briar and spices lifted by warm, fresh spirit and a modest sweetness. Underpinned by smooth, fine tannins, it finishes with a delightful length of flavour, refreshing spirit and acidity. (Rutherglen, 93 points, drink 2010-2014) Jeremy Oliver

Valdespino Pedro Ximenez El Candado (Jerez)

Valdespino is one of the most treasured Sherries. El Candado is made from Pedro Ximenez grapes which once harvested are left out in the sunshine for at least two weeks. The grapes dehydrate naturally, absorbing the unique and unmistakable flavours of the Mediterranean sun as they turn into raisins. The sugar levels rise, and through the Solera and Criadera maturation system the wine produced is of an intense mahogany colour with an aroma of raisins. On the palate it is rich velvety and very smooth with a long aftertaste. more

Valdespino Pedro Ximenez Yellow Label (Jerez)

Valdespino is one of the oldest and most traditional Sherry houses.  They still ferment a large proportion of their wines in wood, giving their wines added depth and complexity.

Colour is an aged clear yellow brown, very dark in colour (hence ‘Black’ Sherry), with a green tinge from extended barrel ageing. The bouquet is one of intense sultanas which drives the palate delivering mellow sunburnt and sweet grape characters. A heavy-weight, sweet dessert fortified wine, dense with a very powerful assault on the palate. Darkly raisiny with hints of licorice and more. Long-lasting aftertaste and wonderfully mature, complex, hints. Very pleasing and luscious.

Warres Vintage Port 2007

An evocative mélange of sweetscented wild flowers, Rainier cherry, cocoa and cool eucalyptus pack a punch to the nose. A tale of two Ports: one side is soft and exudes feminine stylishness and immediate approachability, while the other is endowed with power and massively concentrated fruit. Rich and chewy, showcasing a sweet entry with black cherry, ripe plum and blackcurrant flavors, enhanced by an exemplary level of acidity. The persistent finish is a showstopper while the impressively firm grippy tannins show up in time for the curtain call, allowing this 2007 VP to age effortlessly for three decades minimum, and possibly five. But there’s no reason to wait as it shows lots of charm now, too. 6,500 cases produced (12 x 750s). Simply put, this is the best Warre’s Vintage Port I’ve ever had, at this early stage of its evolution Roy Hersh , For the Love of Port 01/11/2009

A floral wine, offering dusty tannins to go with its sweet crushed strawberry flavors. There are spice and black fig flavors as well as elegance - a sense of proper restraint just waiting to power out in maybe 10 years. At the moment, it is all fruit, but over time it will show more structure. Wine Enthusiast 01/10/2009

The first Warre's vintage to be made entirely from its own vineyards. Fine, fragrant, great aromatic purity yet restrained. Rich, full style, even fleshy. Not as big as some but fine and expressive. Lovely grip, with elegance and poise. Richard Mayson , Decanter Magazine 01/08/2009

Liquorice and richness on the nose. Lots of spice and sweetness and very complete. Perhaps the wine closest to classic vintage port of all the 42 wines tasted here. Biding its time, all in place. Not at all showy. Dry finish. Great balance and integration. Jancis Robinson , jancisrobinson.com 21/05/2009

Fresh, bright red fruit and a hint of Golden Delicious apple too. Full bodied but silky, showing preserved cherries and a bit of cream on the finish Richard Hemming , Jancis Robinson website 12/05/2009

Offers lovely perfumed aromas and beautiful raspberry and blackberry character, turning to tar, black truffle and wet earth. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with a balance of very chewy tannins and sugary fruit at the finish. This goes on and on. The great 1994 again? James Suckling , Wine Spectator 06/05/2009

Fathomless inky plum in appearance, this has instant appeal. The nose is richly concentrated with seductive old vine fruit lifted by fresh primary berry notes and fresh violets. The palate is similarly aromatic, lively with a gregarious personality which almost obscures really impressive underlying power. Corney & Barrow 01/05/2009

Violets and dried flowers overlay the black fruits on the nose. Blackcurrant and bramble underpinned by sloe give a seductive richness and this is emphasised by the dark chocolate and liquorice. The mid palate is dense packed with fruit power. The polished tannins all add to the seductive feel and the elegance of the finish. Derek Smedley, MW
