Fundraising: Banrock Station Shiraz 2005
- SKU
- 2148f
In the heart of South Australia’s Riverland region, Banrock Station is a 1,800 hectare protected mallee eco-system, a 250 hectare vineyard and home to the Banrock Station Wine & Wetland Centre. At Banrock Station, we are working to restore degraded natural resources and rejuvenate the magnificent Banrock Wetland. We are also working to ensure environmental havens are restored and preserved for future generations by donating part proceeds of every sale of Banrock Station wines to Landcare Australia. The vineyards of South Australia’s Riverland produce rich, full flavoured fruit and the Banrock planting is no exception. The quality fruit that is produced is carefully handled at every stage of the wine making process to ensure that the inherent characteristics are maintained. The 2005 Shiraz is vibrant purple with deep red hues, this wine epitomises the depth of colour and flavour Australian Shiraz’s are renowned for. Aromas of black currant, cherry and spicy oak precede a soft and supple palate. Fresh fruit characters of cherry and red berry fruits are balanced by licorice and tantalising chocolate flavours. Hints of cinnamon, vanilla and oak add complexity to this exceptional wine. more

Medium straw with green hues, this wine displays ripe tropical fruit, with peach and melon aromas and subtly sweet vanilla oak overtones. The palate is medium to full bodied, rich in tropical peach flavours, with subtle oak, creating a soft, round and creamy mouthfeel. A complex wine with a pleasant, lingering finish It's a similar story with the second wine that I'm recommending. The Clare Valley makes Australia's best riesling, smart, often extraordinarily, good shiraz, some flavourful cabernet and a handful of good semillon, grenache and gewurztraminer. But it's not a region that does chardonnay particularly well. This budget-priced white from XXXXX is, however, a good, easy-drinking wine at a fair price. It has bright, ripe, sweet tropical fruit flavours, is clean and lively with refresing, crisp acidity.' Peter Forrestal, Quaff more

Fundraising: Hardys Bankside Chardonnay 2006

In 1853 Thomas Hardy, the founder of Hardys wines, bought a large block of land alongside the banks of the Torrens River, three miles west of Adelaide, South Australia. It was here that he built Hardys Bankside Cellars. Sadly the cellars were destroyed by fire in 1905. This wine is a tribute to Thomas Hardys first cellar, which is depicted through an original photograph on the front label. The Bankside Chardonnay is pale straw in colour, and exhibits aromas of peach and white pear. On the palate the wine displays intense peach, balanced with soft vanillin oak. This medium bodied chardonnay has with creamy yeast characters on the mid palate and a lemon citrus finish. This wine has been crafted to drink as a young wine. This wine is full of character and flavour, while also offering exceptional value. Fruit for this wine was sourced from wine regions in South Eastern Australia, and was both mechanically harvested and hand picked in the cool of the night in order to retain freshness of flavour. After the fruit was crushed it was transferred to stainless steel tanks were it underwent a temperature controlled fermentation. A small portion has been exposed to oak, adding another dimension to this wine. more

2006 Clare Valley vintage is one of the best in years, Simon Osicka senior winemaker at Leasingham believes Shiraz to be the the best since the benchmark 1998. "In terms of overall quality at all grades, the 2006 vintage has been a very rewarding one. The quality from all sub-regions of the district has been consistently good," he said. A superb job finessing vines at the older Schobers and Provis vineyards, the attention to detail focused on canopies leading up to vintage, which has resulted in an outstanding Magnus Near-perfect seasonal conditions in the lead-up to harvest have produced rich, ripe and concentrated flavours in the Shiraz. A relatively mild to warm season from spring through to harvest ripened the fruit to near-perfection. Grape picking started on schedule, the vintage progressed so well, that premium parcels were harvested one week earlier than previous years. A particularly good year for Shiraz, which is incredibly fragrant, exhibits fabulous concentration, very sweet fruit and lots of plum and mulberry characters. The hallmark Shiraz characters are very powerful, with some serious attitude, and texturaly rich, 2006 will be viewed as a terrific Magnus Shiraz vintage for many years to come. Approx 14.0% Deep ruby red, this wine displays lifted aromas of raspberries, mocha and black pepper spice. With vibrant and expressive fruit, the palate shows flavours of red berries and chocolate. Balanced by juicy acidity, this Shiraz has fleshy sweetness and mouth filling lingering tannins. A plump and fruity concentrated wine with plenty of pepper and blackberry cassis fruit. Sublime in origin, offering regional expressions of mint and tar, hints of violet and a sweet, loamy earthiness, magical oak playing a background role to the wine's fruit and body. The wine shows all the hallmarks of Clare Valley reds, with expressive flavour and a full rich structure. Generous and honest, a reflection of one of Australia’s premier Shiraz regions.
