Castle Rock Estate is nestled on the eastern slopes of the Porongurup mountain range and is named after a prominent nearby landmark. The vineyard has a cool and elevated northerly aspect, resulting in intensely flavoured wines.

A light and pale colour with green hues. The bouquet is Intense lime juice backed by a delicate fragrance of orange blossom and lavender giving a bouquet that is zesty and fresh, yet also of great depth. The palate is the tightly wound structure that is enveloped by beautiful rich lime juice fruit characters. This fruit richness provides the generosity and succulence that is so appealing as a young wine. The core of natural acidity creates that great structure, finesse and length for the wine. The balance between the fruit generosity and tight acid structure is the hallmark of Castle Rock Rieslings. Lively, crisp and with an attractive delicacy now, this wine will blossom with age for at least fifteen years.

2022 was a warm but excellent vintage in Western Australia, and in the heartland of great Riesling, the Great Southern, winemaker Rob Diletti toils away making consistently great, precise, focused (and value-for-money) Rieslings. They speak of Porongurup in their soft floral aromatics and talc-y acidity in the mouth, and they achieve that hard-to-do thing: great on release, great in a decade too. Anyway, the 2022 Porongurup Riesling is so typical of Porongurup (my favorite subregion in the Great Southern for Riesling) that it brings a smile to the face. In the mouth, the wine is layered with green apple, chalk, jasmine florals, white tea and finger lime parcels. On the mid-palate, this focused wine changes tack and splays out through the back palate and lingering finish with concentrated flavor. It's a beautiful wine. One of the best. Pristine and penetrative, with an alluring fragrance of lime juice, white peach, green apple skin and lavender backed by a whiff of mineral. It’s long and focused, with vivacious lime and lemon flavours driving with purity and focus towards a dry, schisty finish of mouthwatering acidity. Enjoy now or much later – it’s your call! Date: Nov 2022; Drink: 2034-2042; Rating: 95 Points; Jeremy Oliver

Riesling from Castle Rock has consistently been top drawer since the earliest of these were released in the 80s. This is still quite tight but the deep fruit intensity is evident while the palate displays that spicy minerality of the region. Shows classic riesling tension through the palate to a bracing finish. Date: Nov 2022; Price: $30.00; Drink: 2022-2032; Rating: 95 Points; Ray Jordan; Wine Pilot
