Castelli Frankland Shiraz 2014
In 2004, the Castelli’s dream of a family-owned winery became a reality when, upon the slopes of Mt Shadforth, the Castelli Estate property was purchased - A 120 acre farm which overlooks Wilson’s Inlet, Mt. Lindesay and the lush countryside around Denmark.
The property was acquired with a semi-complete winery which, with the family’s extensive construction and engineering experience, was later completed in 2006. With a strong commitment to quality, the next twelve months were spent putting together a highly talented winemaking team. The Castelli family enticed winemakers Mike Garland and Andrew Hoadley to come on board in what were the beginnings of one of today’s most promising Western Australian boutique wine brands.
This wine is a classic example of Great Southern Shiraz at its best. Aromas reminiscent of rich, opulent mulberries, plum pudding and intense spices with hints of star anise and chocolate fudge. The full-bodied palate builds to a crescendo before finishing with sweet, rounded tannins that are perfectly integrated with savoury French Oak. The balance and structural components in the wine can only be achieved from fully ripened cool climate fruit. This wine will be able to be confidently cellared over the next 7-10 years.
The bouquet sets the scene with its black pepper and licorice background to black fruits; the palate is like a black panther: you know its going to strike, but can?t help riding the waves of the spicy black fruits, the audacious tannins ripping and tearing the fabric of the wine, its layer-upon-layer of black fruits. A bargain for decades of enjoyment. Rating: 96 Points; Drink by: 2044; Price: $32.00; Date Tasted: March 2016; Alcohol: 14.5%; James Halliday Wine Companion
