The Bowen Estate vineyards were established in 1972. Doug and Joy Bowen, joined by their daughter Emma continue the tradition of producing classic Coonawarra wines from hand pruned vines. The vineyards are situated in the heart of Coonawarra on prime terra rossa soil.
With over 30 vintages produced at Bowen Estate, the wines consistently reflect the true characteristics of the area. Emma now joining her parents, only enhances the continuity of the classic Coonawarra style.
An opulent and stylish wine that leaps out of the glass. Plenty of seductive dark berry fruit characters dominate not only the bouquet but the palate as well. Delicately handled fine grain French oak supports all aspects of this wine. The palate is well structured and richly textured with classic Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon berry richness and balanced tannins. A brilliant harmonious wine from one of the better Coonawarra vintages.
There's pure blackcurrant fruit opening the batting on both the bouquet and medium-bodied palate, with mulberry, Coonawarra earth, cedar, a wisp of mint and a flash of red berry joining the dots. An outstanding cabernet with remarkable intensity, poise and structure. To my mind reminiscent of the classic 1984 release of the same label, this delivers the depth of fruit sought after in great Coonawarra cabernet but with the structure and balance more reminiscent of Bordeaux. Its penetrative aromas of cassis, mulberries, dark plums and fresh cedar/vanilla oak reveal dusty, faintly herbal nuances, while its palate-staining presence of small black and red berries is framed by an exceptional spine of drying, chalky tannins that culminate in a graphite-like minerality.
