Bannockburn Vineyards was established by Stuart Hooper in 1974. His vision was to create a vineyard which would produce Australian wine of a quality to emulate the great wines of France, in particular the great Burgundies. Stuart Hooper had a purist, uncompromising approach to quality grape growing and winemaking. He had a strong belief in making wines which genuinely reflect the flavours of the vineyard.
Although Stuart has since passed away, Bannockburn Vineyards remains in the Hooper family and his philosophy remains as the cornerstone behind all we do at Bannockburn today.
Named in recognition of Bannockburn founder, Stuart Hooper, the S.R.H is produced from fruit off 12 rows of Bannockburn's oldest Chardonnay vines. This special plot produces exceptional fruit with the best expression of the trademark Bannockburn "oyster shell" character derived from the ancient marine sediments that make up the bedrock of the area. The wine has spent a total of 3 years on lees in a mixture of barrique, puncheon and stainless steel which contributes greatly to the texture and complexity.
From 12 rows of chardonnay planted '76; matured for 3 years on lees in a single oak cask. Still bright straw-green, its intensity makes you rear back and regroup for a second taste, the only question whether it is ripe enough, and the answer is yes it is; but it's all about grapefruit and minerals on the ultra-long palate, finish and aftertaste.
